Workplace safety consulting

A workplace safety consultant reduces injuries by fixing the system that produces them — hazard assessment, supervisor capability, employee involvement, and metrics — rather than policing individual behavior. Meridian EHS Partners pairs OSHA-grade compliance work with the culture and leadership mechanics that determine whether it sticks.

What does a workplace safety consultant do differently from a compliance audit?

Compliance answers “are we legal?” Workplace safety consulting answers “why do people still get hurt when we are?” Most recordables at compliant facilities trace to a handful of system failures: job hazard analyses that describe the job as imagined rather than as performed, supervisors promoted for output and never taught to lead safety, near-miss channels nobody trusts, and metrics that only count bodies after the fact. We diagnose and rebuild those four systems.

What actually moves injury rates?

In our client data, four interventions carry most of the load: task-level JHAs written with the operators who do the work; supervisor safety capability — teaching leads to run 5-minute pre-shift huddles, coach in the moment, and respond to reports without blame; a functioning near-miss system (we target a 10:1 near-miss-to-recordable reporting ratio as the health indicator); and leading-indicator scorecards — inspections completed, corrective actions closed on time, huddle participation — reviewed by leadership with the same seriousness as production numbers.

Do safety committees actually work?

Yes, when they have a charter, a budget, rotating hourly membership, and authority to close findings — and no, when they are a monthly meeting that produces minutes. We stand up committees with defined scopes and train them on hazard recognition, and in several states an effective committee also earns a workers’ compensation premium credit.

★★★★★
“Our compliance scores were fine and people were still getting hurt. Meridian rebuilt our JHAs with the operators and trained every lead on the floor. Two years later our recordable count is down by more than half and the near-miss log finally has real entries in it.”

Frequently asked questions

How long until injury rates actually move?

Leading indicators (reporting rates, inspection completion) move in the first quarter. Lagging indicators like TRIR are credible only over 12–24 months — anyone promising a 90-day TRIR turnaround is either lucky or reclassifying injuries. Our construction case study ran 18 months: 4.8 to 1.2.

Is this behavior-based safety (BBS)?

No. Classic BBS often devolves into blaming workers for conditions management controls. We work the hierarchy honestly: fix conditions and systems first, build supervisor capability second, and address individual behavior last — inside a reporting culture that does not punish honesty.

Can you help lower our EMR / workers’ comp costs?

Injury reduction is the main lever, and we also review claims-side hygiene: prompt reporting, return-to-work programs, and classification accuracy. Clients holding TRIR gains typically see meaningful experience-modifier improvement inside two to three rating years.

Our problem is one department. Can you scope that narrowly?

Yes — a department-level diagnostic (JHA review, supervisor assessment, incident pattern analysis) is a common $5,000–$9,000 engagement, and it often becomes the internal proof-of-concept that funds the site-wide program.
